Here’s an overview of the confirmed speakers: Environment Agency – Julie Foley, Director of Flood Risk Strategy and National Adaptation Following the Environment Agency’s successful delivery of the government’s previous £2.6bn investment between 2015 and 2021, more than £860m will be spent in 2021-22 alone to support 1,000 schemes across England as a part of the Environment Agency’s annual capital programme. The new Flood and Coastal Erosion Investment Plan, published in summer 2021, outlines new flood and coastal scheme that will better protect 336,000 properties by 2027, helping to avoid £32bn in wider economic damages and reducing national flood risk by up to 11%. Leeds City Council – Jonathan Moxon, Flood Risk Manager As Flood Risk Manager at Leeds City Council, Jonathan is best placed to share insight into the ongoing and proposed works to further protect the city. He will also be able to share details about the current flood prevention schemes in place, and how these will be redeveloped further including changes to existing infrastructure. Bristol City Council – Nuala Gallagher, Director of Growth, Investment and Infrastructure Bristol City Council have recently announced the £100m investment into flood management into the Avonmouth and Severnside Enterprise Area. This investment will reduce flood risk to at least 2,500 existing homes and businesses, create up to 80 hectares of wetland habitat and opening up 60 hectares for the Enterprise Area, which will supply 12,000 new jobs by 2026. Nuala will be able to share details of the flood management scheme, alongside the benefits for the region. Environment Agency – Paul Burrows, Flood and Coastal Risk Manager for East Anglia East Anglia is one of the most commonly affected areas of the country for flooding. Paul will share insight into how the Environment Agency approach flooding in the region, and will be able to give an update into ongoing and upcoming flood prevention projects for East Anglia. Cumbria County Council – Angela Jones, Executive Director, Economy & Infrastructure After being hit with over £300 million worth of damage in the 2009 floods, Cumbria is an area commonly affected by flooding. Angela will be able to share insight into the current flood prevention programmes and the partnerships in place with groups through the community and the Environment Agency. We will also hear about other future schemes in the pipeline and how they will impact the county positively. Scottish Borders Council – Conor Price, Project Director (Hawick Flood Prevention Scheme) The Hawick Flood Protection Scheme is one of the largest flood defence projects ever carried out in Scotland. A combined £88m has been invested into the project from the Scottish Government, Scottish Borders Council and various other regional stakeholders. Conor joins us to share his expert opinions on how the UK must combat climate change, as well as the importance of natural flood management and further insight into the Hawick project and the impact it will have on the wider region. Environment Agency – Helen Todd, Humber Strategic Manager Rising sea levels place the Humber under increasing threat of major flooding. The Environment Agency are working in partnership with 12 local authorities and the LEP to develop Humber 2100+ – a new tidal flood risk management strategy for the Humber for the next 100 years. Helen will run through how the partnership is looking to address how we manage risk in the future and why that needs to be different to the way we have thought about it previously in order to ensure the Humber is able to adapt to future change. Waterman Aspen – Andrew Woodliffe, Divisional Director Waterman Aspen are one of the leading organisations in the flood risk management sector – working with clients in the public and private sector. They’re helping to shape local and national flood risk management planning policy, inform planning decisions, fulfil statutory duties and design and manage sustainable flood risk management measures. Andrew will be representing the organisation – where he leads on the growth of the water sector, working with a wide range of clients including the Environment Agency, water companies and private sector consultants. Coastal Partners – Zane Gunton, Capital Projects Team Leader Coastal Partners is a partnership between Havant, Portsmouth, Gosport and Fareham Councils to protect the 162km coastline of Hampshire. They have multiple ongoing projects including the Southsea Coastal scheme, which is part of a £100m project to protect over 8,000 homes and over 700 businesses in the region. Zane will be able to share insight into the defence schemes that they incorporate, as well as sharing insight into the importance of natural flood defences and how the country must respond to climate change.
