The blueprint highlighted in the local plan will also see 220-acres set aside to develop new offices and industrial space to create thousand of new jobs, in addition to a 180-acre extension to Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park (LUSEP).

Some of those sites include:

  • Three major extensions of Garendon Park, Broadnook and Thorpebury to create 8,355 new homes
  • Over 2,000 new in Birstall, Thurmaston and Syston
  • 2,200 new homes in Loughborough which aims to become the economic, social and cultural heart of the borough
  • 220 acres of employment land – with 37-acres set for offices, and 163-acres for light industrial developments

To unlock elements of the plan developers will be expected to pay around £200m in Section 106 money to help build the new homes – which will be pumped back into the built environment through amenities and infrastructure improvements.

Cllr Richard Bailey, Lead Member for Planning, said: “The Charnwood Local Plan 2021-27 sets a clear path for how the borough will emerge from the pandemic with a programme supporting economic growth, environmental safeguard and healthy communities. This combination will create a place which people of all ages and background will aspire to live, work and play, not only for the next 16 years but far beyond as well.”
